Expert treatment to save infected teeth

Root canal (endodontic) treatment is a common dental procedure carried out to save a tooth when its internal tissue has been affected by infection. The pulp inside teeth, while holding many important nerves and blood vessels, can become compromised due to decay or damage.

Without root canal treatment, infection can spread, potentially leading to more severe problems and possibly even requiring extraction of the tooth. But effective treatment can restore the tooth and prevent its removal.

Frequently asked questions about root canal treatment

What are the signs that a tooth has become infected?

There are several symptoms that indicate the need for root canal treatment.

These include:

  • Severe toothache
  • Discomfort when biting and chewing
  • Increased sensitivity to heat and cold
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • A high fever
  • Swelling of the face
  • Bad breath
Does the procedure hurt?
The use of an anaesthetic will allow the treatment to feel relatively comfortable. Following your appointment, some slight discomfort may be experienced, though this can be easily managed with standard over-the-counter medications.
Why is root canal treatment necessary?
If the pulp within a tooth becomes infected it can result in an abscess (a swollen area with a build-up of pus). Without treatment, the infection will quickly spread and ultimately necessitate the removal of the tooth.
What does the procedure involve?

To begin the treatment, a small access hole is created in the top of the tooth to allow for the removal of the internal tissues and infection. Once these have been cleared away, the root canals are carefully cleansed and filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha.

The tooth is then fully sealed. If it requires extra strengthening and protection then a dental crown can be created to cover it. This will be custom-made to blend in seamlessly with the rest of your smile.
