Protecting vulnerable teeth from decay

Fissures are the grooves on the top surfaces of molar and pre-molar teeth, which can easily trap food particles that are hard to reach when brushing. This can result in bacteria build-up and eventually the creation of a cavity.

A sealant provides a protective layer which coats the tooth surface, blocking food and bacteria from settling. As well as being highly effective, this treatment is also easy, fast and convenient.

Although generally used for children’s teeth, adults who are particularly concerned with cavity prevention can also benefit from the treatment.

The advantages of fissure sealants

Frequently asked questions about fissure sealants

What is the sealant material from?
The sealant is made of a plastic resin that offers optimum tooth protection. When hardened, it forms an incredibly strong layer which is virtually undetectable.
What happens during the process?
The treatment process is simple and doesn’t require an anaesthetic. Your dentist will prepare the tooth’s enamel before applying the resin-based solution and curing it with UV light. The end result is a durable coating that shields the tooth for an extended period of time.
When are sealants typically used?
Fissure sealants are generally applied when the first adult teeth start to appear, usually between the ages of six and seven. As the remaining teeth come through over time, they can also be protected.
Is the treatment effective?
Many recent studies have demonstrated that sealants are highly effective in deterring cavities. However, they should be checked regularly by your dentist, which can be done at a regular six-monthly examination.
How long do they last?
A well-placed sealant should last as long as a traditional amalgam filling. Even if the sealant is broken or missing, it can easily be fixed and substituted. Regular assessment from the dentist will help ensure the longevity of the treatment.
