A highly effective tooth replacement solution

There are a number of effective ways to replace missing teeth, including dental bridges, dentures and dental implants. The most appropriate option for you depends on several factors such as how many teeth you have missing and the health of your jaw or neighbouring teeth.

Dental bridges are best suited to cases where a small number of teeth are missing (usually between one and four).

A bridge typically comprises of the appropriate number of replacement teeth (called pontics) which are fitted with a dental crown on either side. These two supporting crowns are fitted on top of the two natural teeth adjacent to the gap.

Dental implants can also be used to support a bridge.

Frequently asked questions about dental bridges

Why should I replace missing teeth?

The replacement of missing teeth is beneficial for several reasons. The first of these is it can improve your appearance. A significant gap between teeth can unbalance your smile and also affect the shape of your face over time.

Additionally, the gap can cause additional stress on the surrounding teeth as they compensate for the unevenness of workload. It can also lead to misalignment in how your teeth bite together.

Finally, food can become packed in the gap, putting neighbouring teeth at risk from both cavities and gum disease.

What are my other options?

Although bridges are very durable and effective, the optimum tooth replacement option is dental implants. These replace the root section of a missing tooth and are fitted directly to the jaw bone for exceptional stability.

The implant is then fitted with a dental crown on top (via an abutment) to form the visible part of the new artificial tooth.

What happens during the process?

At your first treatment appointment, the adjacent teeth that are going to support the bridge are prepared. This involves contouring the tooth surface to allow for comfortable and secure fit of the new bridge.

Impressions are then taken so that the bridge can be custom-crafted at the laboratory. A temporary bridge is then fitted in place while the final version is being created.

The temporary device is then removed and the final bridge fitted securely into position at the second appointment.
