The importance of dental hygiene

If you wish to protect against dental problems such as tooth decay and cavities, it is essential to practice good oral hygiene habits and visit a hygienist regularly. Prevention is always the best option where possible.

Professional cleaning can rid your teeth of plaque and tartar accumulation, and the hygienist will also check for any potential issues that may need referring on to the dentist.

As well as the obvious benefits to your oral health, hygiene appointments are also important for protecting your general health. Many recent studies have linked poor oral hygiene to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and lung disease.

Frequently asked dental hygiene questions

What is biofilm?

Biofilm (more commonly known as plaque) is a sticky, colourless collection of bacteria that builds up on the surface of teeth. It is formed by a mixture of food particles and saliva.

The accumulation of plaque is the primary cause of gum disease and can result in decay, which can weaken the teeth and gums even further. Plaque can also trap stains on teeth, leading to discolouration.

It is essential to brush your teeth at least twice a day, as well as flossing between them at least once a day, in order to stop plaque from forming.

What is Guided Biofilm Therapy air polishing?

Guided Biofilm Therapy air polishing is an advanced system that is extremely effective at removing plaque from teeth. It achieves a high level of cleaning without any abrasion and leaves teeth feeling smoother and cleaner.

The system has the following great benefits:

  • Deep cleaning with exceptional plaque removal
  • Can remove tea and coffee stains
  • Fast and convenient
  • Painless, with no abrasion
  • Safe and scientifically proven
  • Can clean the tongue and gums as well as teeth
What does the GBT process involve?

The cleaning procedure has four main parts:

Step 1: Disclose
A special liquid is added to the mouth to make the plaque visible and guide your hygienist to areas that need particular targeting.

Step 2: Airflow
Plaque, tartar and stains are removed using a combination of water, air and a polishing powder. As well as cleaning the teeth (above and below the gumline) the system is also used to clean the tongue, gums and palette.

Step 3: Periflow
The water, air and powder combination is applied again through a special tip that helps targets plaque located in harder to reach pockets in the gums.

Step 4: Check
The hygienist will thoroughly check your teeth that all the plaque has been removed.

How else is a visit to the hygienist able to help me?

As well as thoroughly cleaning your teeth, the hygienist will check your mouth and highlight any potential issues (referring you on to the dentist if necessary).

They will also advise on improvements that you can make to your regular dental hygiene routine and your diet to optimise your oral health.

How can I clean between my teeth at home?

Dental floss is a great tool for removing debris from between teeth and is an essential part of good regular oral hygiene. For larger gaps, interdental brushes can be used to great effect to clean the sides of teeth where toothbrushes can’t reach.

Your hygienist will be happy to give you guidance on using both these items.
