Keeping young smiles healthy

Although we warmly welcome patients of all ages to the practice, we go the extra mile to make children’s visits as pleasant and comfortable as possible.

It is important that they have positive early experiences of going to the dentist to reinforce their desire to care of their teeth and gums from an early age.

Establishing good dental habits

Prevention is always better than cure in dentistry and this is particularly true when it comes to our younger patients. Properly educating children on good dental hygiene at the outset will give them a solid foundation on which to build.

What are the benefits of regular dental visits for children?

Frequently asked questions

From what age should I take my child to the dentist?

Ideally, your child should start visiting the dentist when they’re 12-15 months old, or as soon as their front teeth appear. An examination at this age will allow the dentist to check the growth of your child’s teeth and the surrounding soft tissues.

The dentist will provide preventive dental guidance and parents will also have an opportunity to talk about issues like feeding, teething and habits such as dummies or thumb-sucking.Finally, during the period when kids start to walk and are still unsteady, dental trauma is quite common.

If your youngster is used to visiting the dentist, then they should be more at ease if an emergency dental appointment is necessary.

How often should I take my child to the dentist?
It is recommended that children visit the dentist every 6 months, as their diet, habits and growth are constantly changing. However, your dentist may decide to alter this frequency depending on the individual needs and oral health of your child.
At what age should you start cleaning children’s teeth?
The answer to this is fairly straightforward. Children’s teeth should ideally be cleaned as soon as they first appear. This should be done twice a day. It is also important to clean the gums as well as part of this routine.
Does tooth decay affect young children?

Dental issues can begin early so it is important to look after children’s teeth from the start. The prevalence of refined sugars in modern diets accentuates the risks.

Decay in younger children can also be due to the use of bottles or breastfeeding. An early dental appointment can help spot any issues and the dentist will be able to guide you on what action to take.

Is fluoride bad for children?

Fluoride should not be given to children under the age of 6 months as it can be toxic while the kidneys are still developing. After 6 months, it is recommended to use fluoride toothpaste on any teeth that have come through.

Fluoride is vital in preventing tooth decay and ensuring your child’s smile remains healthy into adulthood. It is important to get advice from a dentist on the right amount to use.

What are fissure sealants?

These are great way to protect the molar and molar teeth at the back of your child’s mouth. A thin coating is applied over the cusps and ridges of these teeth, as this is the most vulnerable area where decay can develop. Please visit our page on fissure sealants for further information.
